Numerous periods of history have been characterized by revolutionary changes in science and technology. But, if they were evenly spread over the course of the centuries, these events would be less significant. Because most of them occurred during a shorter period that was more intensified than they are today, it is imperative that they stay in mind to better understand our current world. The story behind this post is one such event: the discovery of how to create electricity with magnetism through induction by Humphry Davy (1801-1889). It was discovered on August 10th 1835 and changed mankind's life forever. Before this discovery, electricity was a mystery to science. The only way to produce it was using batteries, which were very expensive and had a short life span. As a result, the use of most appliances was limited only to the wealthy population. Yet the most important invention in electric science came in 1831 with Michael Faraday's (1791-1867) invention of how AC induction motors work. In 1831 Faraday observed that when he moved a magnet in front of a copper plate lined with zinc, electric current would be produced through induction. In the process of producing electricity from magnetism through induction he realized that he had also discovered how an electric motor works. His discovery of this motor was the key to the future development of electric motors. Electricity changed man's life, because it brought lightness, the possibility to use the phone and radio (for communications), washing machines (which had not existed before electricity), refrigerators, vacuum cleaners (previously there was only the broom), and all kinds of new electric appliances. The production of electricity with magnets through induction is based on Faraday's discovery. Strong magnets are used to create a magnetic field around a wire that moves inside that field. When its movement makes it cut through that magnetic field, an electric current is produced because opposite charges are created on both sides of the wire. Think of it as an electric field with a heavy needle inside it. When the needle moves, a current is produced in the wire. The more intense is the movement of the needle, the more intense will be the current. This is how a generator works, and why most power plants have two or more generators that work in series. The good thing about this discovery is that every time you use your electric appliances the generator continues to produce electricity. In addition, with this discovery there was a possibility to establish an electric network throughout Europe and America. This allowed for better communication worldwide and also brought lightness to cities around Italy. The influence of this discovery on modern society is evident. The use of electricity brought many benefits to mankind; these benefits are still present today. With the invention of electricity with magnets through induction, Ferraris (1838), Parkes (1850), and Armstrong (1881) all produced models that used dynamos to produce the electric current. These were used in early electrical power generation systems; however they became obsolete soon after their creation. These early dynamos were made of iron or wood and always had open wheels. They did not have good efficiency, since these devices had to be used with cables that did not have insulation, which resulted in more resistance than the original dynamo. cfa1e77820
